The Best Walking Trails in Busselton: A Local’s Guide
At Amalfi Resort, we believe the best way to experience the magic of Geographe Bay is at a walking pace. For over 20 years, our team has helped guests discover the hidden corners of the South West, and the question we hear most at reception is: “Where are the best walking trails in Busselton?”
While generic travel apps can show you a map, they cannot tell you which path has the best shade in the afternoon or where you are most likely to spot a pod of dolphins. We have curated this guide to provide the local context that only a long-term resident can offer. From the doorstep of our Busselton resort accommodation to the rugged heights of the Cape, these are the paths we walk ourselves.

1. The Geographe Bay Foreshore Path (Our Front Yard)
We are incredibly lucky to have the Foreshore Path run almost directly past our gates on Earnshaw Road. This is the “Pillar” of Busselton walking. It is a sealed, flat, and beautifully maintained path that connects Busselton to Dunsborough.
For a classic Busselton morning, we suggest turning right out of the resort and walking toward the town centre. It is a roughly 3.8km stroll to the Jetty, passing through manicured parklands and past some of the best beaches in Busselton. If we want peace and quiet, we head west toward Abbey. The path is wide enough for walkers and cyclists to share safely, making it the perfect choice for families with strollers.

2. The Iconic Busselton Jetty Walk
We tell every guest that a trip to Busselton is incomplete without walking the “planks.” Stretching 1.841 kilometres out into the Indian Ocean, it is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.
Walking to the end and back is a 3.6km journey that feels like walking on water. We recommend doing this walk during the “Golden Hour” just before sunset. The view of the shoreline from the end of the jetty is spectacular. We often see stingrays and schools of fish in the clear water below. It is an easy walk, but we always remind guests to bring a light jacket, as the breeze at the end of the pier can be surprisingly cool even in mid-summer.
3. Vasse-Wonnerup Wetlands (The Local Secret)
When we want to escape the crowds, we head to the Vasse-Wonnerup Wetlands. Located just ten minutes from the resort, this is a site of international significance. It is home to over 30,000 waterbirds and offers a serene, quiet atmosphere that feels worlds away from the tourist hubs.
The walking trails here are gentle and provide multiple bird hides where we can sit and watch the local wildlife. It is one of the most peaceful walking trails Busselton has to offer. We find this area particularly beautiful in the winter months when the water levels are high and the bird activity is at its peak.
4. Meelup Regional Park Coastal Trail
A short 20-minute drive from Amalfi Resort takes us to Dunsborough, the gateway to the Meelup Coastal Trail. If we have guests looking for those “postcard” turquoise water views, this is where we send them. The trail winds along the granite headlands from Old Dunsborough to Meelup Beach.
The track is a mix of bush path and rock, providing a more “natural” feel than the town paths. We love this trail between June and November because it serves as an excellent vantage point for whale watching. The elevation provides a clear view out across the bay where Humpback and Southern Right whales are frequently seen breaching.

5. The Tuart Forest National Park
For a change of pace, we often head to the Tuart Forest National Park. This is the largest remaining forest of its kind in the world. The towering Tuart trees, some of which are over 300 years old, create a cathedral-like canopy that is perfect for a shaded walk.
The trails here are flat and easy to navigate. We suggest visiting in late afternoon when the light filters through the trees, creating a golden glow. It is also the best time to spot the Western Ringtail Possum, a rare local resident. For guests interested in a deeper dive into this area, we have a dedicated guide to the Tuart Forest National Park.
6. Quindalup Dunes Trail
If we are looking for a bit of a challenge, the Quindalup Dunes Trail is our go-to. This 6km trail takes us through one of the most significant coastal dune systems in Western Australia.
Be prepared: walking on sand is a serious workout for the legs! However, the reward is the 360-degree view from the top of the dunes. We can see the entire sweep of Geographe Bay from this height. It is a rugged experience that showcases the wilder side of our coastline. We recommend this for guests who want to get their heart rate up and experience the landscape as it was hundreds of years ago.

7. Busselton Heritage Trail
We find that many visitors appreciate the history of our town as much as its natural beauty. The Busselton Heritage Trail is a 2km loop that takes us past some of our most important landmarks, including the Ballarat Steam Engine and the Pioneer Cemetery.
It is a very easy walk that we often combine with a visit to one of the best cafes in Busselton. It is a great way to understand the maritime and timber-milling history that built this region.
The Best Time of Year to Explore Busselton
While we are biased (we love our home year-round!), there is no denying that certain seasons offer a better experience on the trails. If we had to pick a favourite, Spring (September to November) is the gold standard. This is when the South West truly comes alive with world-famous wildflowers, and the temperatures are perfect for longer treks without the summer heat.
Here is what we tell our guests to expect throughout the year:
- Summer (December to February): It is warm and dry, with daytime highs between 25°C and 30°C. For walkers, this is the time for “Sunrise Strolls.” We recommend hitting the Foreshore Path at 6:00 AM to enjoy the cool sea breeze before the sun peaks.
- Autumn (March to May): This is our “Secret Season.” The wind drops, the water is at its warmest, and the daytime temperatures are a mild 20°C to 24°C. It is the most comfortable time for the more exposed trails like the Quindalup Dunes.
- Winter (June to August): Don’t let the occasional shower stop you. Winters are cool (15°C to 18°C) and lush. This is the best time for “Whale Watching Walks” along the Meelup coast. Just bring a waterproof jacket and enjoy having the trails all to yourself.
- Spring (September to November): The “Wildflower Window.” Temperatures sit in the low 20s°C, and the bushwalks through Yelverton and the Tuart Forest are breathtakingly colourful.
How We Prepare for a Day on the Trails
We want your walk to be the highlight of your stay, not a struggle. Before you head out from the resort, we recommend a quick “Amalfi Check” of your gear:
- Know Your Limits: Busselton offers everything from flat pavement to soft sand dunes. If you aren’t used to long distances, we suggest starting with the Foreshore Path. You can always turn back when you’ve had enough!
- The Right Gear: We see many guests try the Meelup track in thongs, but we don’t recommend it! Sturdy sneakers are a must for bush tracks. Don’t forget a hat and a backpack for your essentials.
- Hydration is Key: Even on a cool day, the WA sun is intense. We always suggest carrying at least one litre of water per person for every hour you plan to be out.
- Fuel Up: Pack high-energy snacks like nuts or fruit. If you’re planning a longer hike, our villas have full kitchens where you can prepare a proper picnic lunch before you leave.
Staying Safe in the Great Outdoors
Busselton is a safe and welcoming place to explore, but the natural environment deserves respect. To keep your adventure stress-free, we follow these simple rules:
- Sun Safety: The UV index here is often extreme. We suggest applying SPF 50+ sunscreen even on cloudy days.
- Tell Someone Your Plan: Before you head off into the National Parks or onto the longer coastal trails, let us know at reception or tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Stay on the Path: For your safety and to protect our delicate local flora (and to avoid any curious snakes in the warmer months), we always stick to the marked trails.
- Phone Prep: Make sure your phone is fully charged. While most of our local trails have good reception, some sections of the Meelup or Bunker Bay trails can be patchy.
Amalfi Team Local Tip: If you are heading out for a sunset walk on the Jetty, keep an eye on the time. Once the sun goes down, the temperature drops fast over the water. We always suggest throwing an extra layer in the car or your backpack just in case!
