Family-Friendly Beaches in Busselton: A Practical Guide

Planning a beach day in Busselton with kids is less about which beach looks the prettiest and more about whether there’s shade, where you’ll find the nearest toilet, and how far you can carry an esky from the car. We hear that question every summer from families staying with us at Amalfi Resort, so here’s our answer in one place.

This is our practical guide to five family-friendly beaches in Busselton, with the logistics that actually matter when you’ve got kids in tow: facilities, parking, water depth, playgrounds nearby, dog rules, and exactly how far each one is from our resort.

If you’re trying to decide which Busselton beach suits your trip in general, our practical guide to the best beach in Busselton covers the broader comparison. This article is the family-specific companion piece.

Key Takeaways

  • Geographe Bay Beach is the easiest family beach in Busselton if you’re staying with us, walking distance from the villas
  • Busselton Foreshore is the strongest all-rounder for mixed-age families, with three playgrounds, a seasonal swim enclosure, and full facilities
  • Port Geographe Marina Beach is the safest pick for under-5s and nervous swimmers, with marina-protected water and a nature playground opposite
  • Pack shade, water, and reef-safe sunscreen for any beach beyond Busselton Foreshore where facilities thin out
  • Always check City of Busselton signage for current dog rules and seasonal swim zone dates

What makes a Busselton beach actually family-friendly

Before we get into the list, a quick word on what we look for, because not every beautiful beach is a practical one when you’re managing small humans.

The big three are calm shallow water (Geographe Bay is naturally protected, which is why Busselton wins for families over the wilder west-coast surf beaches), proximity to toilets and freshwater showers (a non-negotiable with kids), and shade or shaded picnic facilities (the WA sun gets serious between 11am and 3pm).

Then the helpful extras: a playground for the inevitable moment when the beach loses its novelty after 90 minutes, easy parking that isn’t a 400-metre walk with your gear, and clear signage on swim safety and dog zones.

Every beach below ticks at least the first three.

Busselton Beaches

1. Geographe Bay Beach (our local, walking distance from the resort)

Distance from us: A few minutes’ walk down Earnshaw Road.

This is the beach right at the end of our street. For our guests with young kids, it’s hard to overstate how much easier a beach day becomes when you can walk back to the villa for a nap, a forgotten hat, or a sandwich.

The water: Geographe Bay is part of a long, naturally sheltered horseshoe of coastline. Waves are gentle. The shallow shelf goes out a long way, which means little ones can paddle safely without sudden drop-offs.

Facilities: This stretch is quieter than the Foreshore, so amenities are minimal on the sand itself. The advantage is that all of our facilities are 100 metres back: bathrooms, freshwater showers, the heated pool, the kids’ wading pool, the playground, and a full kitchen for sandy snack rescue missions.

Parking: Not an issue. You’re walking.

Dogs: Off-leash sections apply west of the Jetty along this stretch. Check signage near the beach access.

Best for: Toddlers, anyone travelling with a baby, multi-generational stays where grandparents want to read in the shade while parents take the kids in.

2. Busselton Foreshore (the all-rounder, 5-minute drive)

Distance from us: 3 km, around a 5-minute drive, or a 15-minute ride along the dedicated cycle path. If you’d like to ride rather than drive, our local’s guide to the best walking trails in Busselton covers the route in detail.

If you’re only doing one big beach day in Busselton, make it this one. The Foreshore is the most facility-rich stretch in town and was redeveloped specifically with families in mind.

The water: Calm. A seasonal swimming enclosure operates in summer, and there’s a permanent swim jetty west of the main Busselton Jetty. This is one of the few WA beaches where the answer to “is it safe for the kids to swim?” is unambiguously yes.

Playgrounds: Three of them. The Sea Play on the Bay shipwreck adventure playground (opened 2018) is the headline act, with a wooden shipwreck kids can climb through and a crow’s nest. There’s a separate train-themed toddler playground between the Visitor Centre and the Youth Precinct, plus a third near the Foreshore West.

Facilities: Toilets, showers, public BBQs, water refill stations, shaded picnic areas, cafes within walking distance (The Goose, The Equinox), and the Busselton Skate Park for older kids who’ve outgrown the playground.

Parking: Plenty along Marine Terrace and Foreshore Parade. Arrive before 10am in peak summer to get close to the playground.

Dogs: Most of the beach west of the Jetty is off-leash, but there are signposted exclusion zones (the area immediately near the jetty and between Margaret and King Street). Worth checking the City of Busselton website for the latest seasonal rules.

Best for: A full-day outing with kids of mixed ages. Park once, swim, play, eat, repeat.

3. Port Geographe Marina Beach (sheltered haven, 10-minute drive)

Distance from us: 7 km, about 10 minutes by car.

This is the local secret we share with families who have very young kids or nervous swimmers. Port Geographe sits inside the marina structure, which means the water is even more sheltered than the open bay. Almost no chop, no real waves.

The water: Marina-protected. Wading depth for a long way out. Beach access is via a ramp, which matters if you’re pushing a pram.

Playground: The Port Geographe Marina Nature Playground sits directly opposite the beach. It’s a proper nature playspace with climbing elements suited to a wide age range. The combination of safe water plus playground in one location is hard to beat for under-5s.

Facilities: Public toilets, BBQ pits, shaded picnic benches, water fountains. Decent for a smaller beach.

Parking: Easy, free, close to the playground and beach access.

Dogs: Check signage. Some sections of the marina perimeter are off-leash-friendly.

Best for: Families with toddlers and pram-age kids. The pram-accessible ramp and combined playground and safe-water setup makes it the lowest-stress beach option in the area.

4. Old Dunsborough Beach (quieter alternative, 25-minute drive)

Distance from us: 25 km, about 25 minutes via Bussell Highway.

Old Dunsborough is the calmer, less developed sibling of Dunsborough Foreshore. The water is shallow and clear, with patches of seagrass kids find interesting to peer at with goggles.

The water: Very calm, very shallow. Easy for new swimmers. The clearer-than-average water makes this a good first snorkel spot for kids who are ready to try.

Facilities: Public toilets at nearby car parks. Basic but adequate.

Playground: Dunsborough Foreshore Playground is a 5-minute drive further if the beach loses its appeal.

Parking: Free and usually easy to find unless it’s school holidays at midday.

Best for: A day trip out of Busselton, particularly when you want a quieter stretch and you’re combining the beach with lunch in Dunsborough or a coffee at Yallingup Coffee Roasters on the way back.

5. Meelup Beach (older kids, snorkelling, 35-minute drive)

Distance from us: 35 km, about 35 minutes via Cape Naturaliste Road.

We mention Meelup because it’s the most photogenic beach in the area and a genuinely lovely family picnic spot, but it suits older kids better than toddlers. The water is clearer and slightly deeper, with rocky sections at either end that are excellent for snorkelling.

The water: Calm in the morning, can pick up a breeze in the afternoon. Best visited before noon. Clear visibility for snorkelling along the rocks at the south end.

Facilities: Basic public toilets at the car park. No playground, no cafe, no shower. This is a pack-everything-yourself beach.

Parking: The car park fills early in summer holidays. Arrive by 9:30am or expect to park along the road and walk in.

Best for: Older kids who can snorkel, families wanting a scenic picnic, anyone combining the trip with Bunker Bay or Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.

What to pack for a Busselton family beach day

A pared-back list that works for most of the beaches above:

Reef-safe sunscreen (the WA sun is unforgiving between 11am and 3pm), wide-brimmed hats, refillable water bottles, a small esky with snacks, a beach umbrella or pop-up shade tent (shade is patchy at Old Dunsborough, Meelup, and Port Geographe), a change of clothes per kid, snorkels and goggles if you’re heading to Meelup, and a light long-sleeve for when the afternoon sea breeze picks up.

Skip the inflatable toys at Port Geographe and Meelup, where they tend to drift quickly with the marina current and offshore breeze respectively.

Why staying with us makes family beach days easier

Family beach days have a logistics tail: sandy kids, wet swimmers, a fridge full of fruit for tomorrow’s esky, and somewhere to dump the gear that isn’t the boot of the car. At Amalfi, we’ve built our four-star family-friendly resort in West Busselton around exactly that reality.

Our one, two, and three-bedroom self-contained villas each come with a full kitchen, private bathroom, and laundry. Wet swimmers have somewhere to go that isn’t the bedroom floor, and tomorrow’s lunch can be made on tonight’s bench. For longer stays, multi-generational groups, or families who simply want room to spread out, a self-contained villa is a very different experience to a hotel room.

For the days you’re not at the beach, we have a heated outdoor pool, a separate children’s wading pool, a shaded playground, a tennis court, and BBQ facilities. We provide cots on request for babies, and our villas comfortably suit everything from a small family weekend to a full multi-generational gathering.

If you’re planning a family trip and want a fuller picture of what there is to do beyond the beach, our guide to family-friendly things to do in Busselton with kids walks through seven activities we recommend to guests every week, from the Underwater Observatory to the Origins Market.

Busselton Foreshore, Port Geographe Marina Beach, Old Dunsborough Beach, and Meelup Beach all have public toilets.
